If you’ve ever sat in an IEP or school meeting and felt your heart race, palms sweat, and brain go blank—you’re not broken. You’re human.
I’ve been in those rooms for years, both as a school psychologist and as a parent, and here’s the truth: You cannot advocate effectively if your nervous system is running on high alert.
When your body thinks it’s in danger (even if the “danger” is just a meeting table and a stack of paperwork), you lose access to the part of your brain that organizes your thoughts, finds the right words, and makes strategic decisions. That’s not bad parenting—it’s biology.
Why Regulation Matters in Advocacy
You’ve heard me say it before:
“Regulation isn’t a luxury. It’s your secret weapon.”
When you’re regulated, you:
-
Think clearly and remember details
-
Catch inconsistencies or red flags in what’s being said
-
Speak with calm authority instead of reactive frustration
-
Leave the meeting feeling confident instead of defeated
Practical Ways to Regulate Before the Meeting
Here are a few tools I personally use (and recommend to the parents I coach):
-
Box Breathing – Inhale for 4, hold for 4, exhale for 4, hold for 4. Repeat until you feel your shoulders drop.
-
Grounding Through Sensory Input – Touch something textured (like a bracelet, stone, or even the seam of your jeans) to anchor yourself in the present moment.
-
Movement Before the Meeting – A short walk, gentle stretching, or pacing in the parking lot can discharge nervous energy.
-
Guided Audio for Focus & Calm – This is where my personal favorite comes in…

Your Takeaway
You can have all the binders, documentation, and talking points in the world—but if your nervous system is hijacked, your voice gets lost.
Regulate first. Advocate second. Your child deserves the version of you who is calm, clear, and unshakable.
