Understanding Stress: The Good, The Bad, and How to Manage It

Understanding Stress: The Good, The Bad, and How to Manage It

What comes to mind when you hear the word "stress"? Do you feel a pang of anxiety, or does your heart start racing? Or do you see stress as a motivator—the push you need to check off your to-do list? If you're like most people, you've probably experienced both perspectives at some point.

What is Stress?

Stress is defined as “response of the body to any demand, whether it is caused by, or results in, pleasant or unpleasant conditions” (Selye, 1976, p. 74). While it often carries a negative connotation, stress isn’t inherently bad. In fact, acute stress can be beneficial—it triggers physiological changes that help us react and adapt to challenges.

Imagine being in a dangerous situation—someone is chasing you, and your body instinctively goes into "fight-or-flight" mode. Your heart rate increases, your muscles tense, and your mind sharpens—all designed to protect you. This same stress response helped our ancestors survi...

The Power of the Pause: Embracing Rest and Boundaries for True Growth

Hello, Resilient Rooted Readers 🌿

Welcome back to the Rooted Resilience community. I’m Wendy Golden, and today I want to talk about something we don’t often discuss honestly—what happens when we pause.

Over the past few weeks, my presence has been quieter. Not because of chaos. Not because I quit. But because I made an intentional decision to stop, reassess, and realign.

And let me tell you—the pause taught me more than the hustle ever could.

The Lesson in the Pause

When you’re building something new—especially in the early stages—momentum can feel like everything. We’re taught that success means constant forward motion.

But here’s the truth no one likes to say out loud:
Sometimes the most responsible move is to stop.

Pausing forces clarity. It exposes what’s sustainable and what’s not. Without reflection, we can build something that looks successful on the outside while quietly burning ourselves out on the inside.

Growth without grounding isn’t growth—it’s survival mode in d...

Insulin Resistance: What it is and Why It Matters

If you’ve been hearing the term insulin resistance tossed around but still feel fuzzy on what it actually means—pull up a chair. This first part of our series is all about breaking it down in plain English so you know exactly what’s going on in your body and why it matters for your health.
So, what is insulin?
Insulin is a hormone made by your pancreas. Its main job is to act like a key that unlocks your cells so glucose (a.k.a. sugar from the food you eat) can get inside and be used as energy.
When everything is working the way it should, insulin keeps your blood sugar stable and your energy steady.
What happens with insulin resistance?
When your body becomes resistant to insulin, that key doesn’t work as well anymore. It’s like trying to unlock your front door with a bent key—you jiggle, you push, you get frustrated. Eventually, your body has to make more and more insulin just to get glucose inside the cells.
The result? Glucose starts hanging out in your bl...

Resilience is an invaluable skill in today’s fast-paced and often unpredictable world. It enables individuals to adapt to challenges, recover from setbacks, and thrive despite adversity. This guide explores practical tips and techniques to help you build and maintain everyday resilience.

What Does Resilience Mean in Daily Life?
Resilience refers to the ability to adapt positively in the face of stress, setbacks, or adversity. In daily life, resilience is what helps you bounce back from challenges like work pressures, personal conflicts, or unexpected changes. Gentle Parenting: Myth, Movement, or Middle Ground?

Uncategorized Feb 23, 2026
“Gentle parenting” is trending everywhere right now—on TikTok, Instagram, and in late-night conversations between exhausted moms. But let’s be real: is it actually possible to parent gently 24/7, or is this just another parenting buzzword that leaves us all feeling guilty?
What Gentle Parenting Isn’t:
  • It’s not letting your kids run the show.
  • It’s not about being “soft” or avoiding discipline.
  • It’s not about being perfect (because, hello—none of us are).
What Gentle Parenting Is:
  • Recognizing your child’s emotions without shaming them.
  • Leading with regulation—because kids borrow their calm from us.
  • Choosing connection over control, even when boundaries are firm.
What I Shared on the Podcast: I got raw about the fact that gentle parenting doesn’t mean you’ll never raise your voice or get triggered. It means you’re making a conscious effort to break cycles, show up differently, and lead your family with respect and resilience.

In today’s fast-paced world, achieving balance and maintaining resilience can feel like a daunting task. However, holistic wellness offers a comprehensive pathway to nurture not just the body, but also the mind and spirit. By integrating practices that focus on overall well-being, individuals can cultivate a lifestyle that promotes resilience and balance, even in the face of life’s challenges.

What is Holistic Wellness?

Regulate Before You Advocate:

Uncategorized Feb 23, 2026
If you’ve ever sat in an IEP or school meeting and felt your heart race, palms sweat, and brain go blank—you’re not broken. You’re human.
I’ve been in those rooms for years, both as a school psychologist and as a parent, and here’s the truth: You cannot advocate effectively if your nervous system is running on high alert.
When your body thinks it’s in danger (even if the “danger” is just a meeting table and a stack of paperwork), you lose access to the part of your brain that organizes your thoughts, finds the right words, and makes strategic decisions. That’s not bad parenting—it’s biology.
Why Regulation Matters in Advocacy
You’ve heard me say it before:
“Regulation isn’t a luxury. It’s your secret weapon.”
When you’re regulated, you:
  • Think clearly and remember details
  • Catch inconsistencies or red flags in what’s being said
  • Speak with calm authority instead of reactive frustration
  • Leave the meeting feeling confident instead of d...

Hemi-Sync audio for focus, sleep, and anxiety relief .
Let’s be real… sometimes your brain feels like a squirrel on Red Bull.
For years, I struggled with anxiety, racing thoughts, and nights where I’d lie awake replaying every “what if.” Then, during college, I discovered something that changed my life: Hemi-Sync® audio.
And no, it’s not woo-woo. It’s neuroscience — and it’s magic.
What Is Hemi-Sync?
Hemi-Sync® is a form of audio technology using binaural beats — sound frequencies played in each ear at slightly different rates. Your brain naturally tries to sync up to the difference, leading to states like:
✅ Deep relaxation
✅ Sharp focus
✅ Stress relief
✅ Meditation
✅ Better sleep

Think of it like a gentle “tune-up” for your nervous system.

The Power of Letting Kids Struggle: Why Rescuing Hurts More Than Helps
By Wendy Golden, Ed.S | Rooted Resilience Podcast

If you've ever had to sit on your hands to stop yourself from fixing your child's problem... this one's for you.

Welcome to Rooted Resilience, where real talk meets real growth. Today, I’m pulling back the curtain on something most parents wrestle with: letting our kids struggle. Yep, I said it. And not only that—I brought in backup: my sister, who knows my quirks, my parenting wins (and flops), and who’s always ready to laugh through the chaos with me.
Let’s get into why letting your child wobble is one of the most powerful gifts you can give them.

Why Our Instinct to Rescue Backfires
As parents, we’re hardwired to protect our kids. Seeing them struggle stirs something primal in us—fix it, soften it, shield them.
But here’s the truth bomb: Shielding your child from every discomfort doesn’t build joy—it blocks their con...
